Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde came out for the NES in 1988, developed by Advance Communication Company. It's one of those odd, story-driven games from the era that tried something different, loosely adapting Robert Louis Stevenson's novella into an action adventure. You don't see many games like it on the platform, mostly because its mechanics are so unusual and its tone so distinct from typical platformers or RPGs of the time.
You control Dr. Jekyll as he walks through Victorian London, trying to reach his wedding on time. The main goal is to manage your stress meter; if it fills up, you transform into Mr. Hyde and must survive a brutal enemy onslaught until you change back. Gameplay involves screen by screen exploration, avoiding hostile townsfolk and environmental hazards, and occasionally using items like a cane for defense. The pacing is deliberately slow and tense, with sudden spikes in difficulty during the Hyde segments. It feels like a constant battle against your own character, which is both frustrating and strangely compelling.
